it's finally going to happen - the event i've both dreamed of and feared: in two months i'll be opening my first solo art show! the particulars are on the 'now showing' page; just thought i'd blab on a bit about it here... it will be held in a clear lake area restaurant called 'tommy's restaurant and oyster bar,' an upscale venue with a banquet room that the owner has developed into a gallery, complete with curator. my show will run approximately two months, and the opening reception is april 17th - save the date if you're in the area, the more the merrier!

one of the more picturesque gristmills i've seen... i also snuck in a few landscape and sunset photos taken in tennessee, near knoxville, and in north carolina, near the biltmore estate... enjoy!so far have pics leaving seattle, juneau and skagway stops, and entering tracy arm fjord... more to come of sawyer's glacier and the return trip, including the victoria stop and a final day spent in seattle - stay tuned!...and round 2, covering more of the inbound leg into tracy arm fjord toward sawyer's glacier......and the final series, covering sawyer's glacier and the return leg, including a stop in victoria and a final vacation day spent in seattle!night lights (nasa commissioned art), 2012 well, today i completed my first artwork as part of my new job duties within nasa (see opening blog entry for background details regarding my new life as a full-time professional artist), and here it is: night lights. it depicts the aurora borealis and imminent orbital dawn as seen from the international space station (iss) as it passes over the bright lights of ireland and scotland. i drew it free-hand in powerpoint, using one of the many wonderful iss photo library images as a reference. i hope i did this wondrous extra-atmospheric view justice ...what are your thoughts on that subject? i'd love to hear them - drop me a quick comment or two if you'd like to share your critique... now, for some sleep...! :) soooo... here i am, new to the wonderful world of blogs... not sure what all to say, but everyone seems to have one, so here goes nothing! :) this particular morning finds me officially starting my first day on a new job - a dream job i might add! i'm still working for nasa but no longer as an aerospace engineer, technical manager, program planning and control analyst, or any of a number of other hats i've worn over the course of my nearly (come september) thirty (yes, that's 30 - where has the time gone?) years with the agency. nosirree bob, this morning i am a full-time, professional artist! how cool is that?! my job duties officially require me to be creative! ...to draw all day long - and get paid for it! ...and the kicker is, i get to do this wonderful job in the comfort of my own home - i get to look out the window out over the water, hear the ducks nattering away outside and my softly playing jazz inside, imbibe a german beer or some wine as the mood strikes, and create create create! my nasa colleagues hope to use my images in a variety of ways: as illustrations for the official international space station calendar, as backdrops for astronaut photos, as posters for nasa displays/kiosks in airports, as cover illustrations for space station publications, and/or as backdrop illustrations for title/credits slides in space station videos produced for nasa select tv broadcasts. i can still hardly believe it - and i am beyond grateful to my new managers for this dream-come-true opportunity. the only down-side at all is one i can easily live with: since the images i create for nasa are automatically nasa property, i can show them as part of my art portfolio but i cannot offer them - or products bearing them - for sale. not a problem; my salary is compensation enough! :) well, it's back to work (heheheh) for me - just thought i'd open my blog with this bit of good news... have a wonderful day!
