here's a work-in-progress glimpse into the creation of one of my recently completed professional works, 'walking on the air' (inspired by my new colleagues' amazing video 'walking on air,' featuring howard blake's haunting music 'walking in the air'); further insights into how i draw in powerpoint can be seen in slideshow & video tutorials on the potpourri page

sublayers, including cloud cover, stars, earth's limn, & aurora light & shadow areas are drawn...
high-energy light plumes are built from the base up...

near-field aurora swirls, begun in previous panel (see lower-right corner), continued in earnest...
the first of the rust-red plume upper structures is roughed-in...

the first of the aurora's plume-like light jets is added; underlying cloud deck is enhanced...
sublayers defining the remaining auroral plumes are added...

work is begun on the aurora's spectacular high-energy light displays...
remaining 'plumage' is added; composition is in its final form...

substructure of the focal high-intensity light display is defined, completing compositional layout...
...it's all tweaks and polishing-up from here on out!

the challenge levied on me by my management was to draw a poster that embodies the concept of 'pride' - an intellectual concept not easily depicted using concrete subjects/images. this is most definitely a work in progress; only a mockup at this stage, with the sole major drawn element being earth, and that's merely a rough sketch. since my initial work-in-progress posting (see below), i've added a star field and minor elements depicting some of the many designs conceived and discarded en route to the final configuration orbiting overhead today. time will tell if i've risen to the challenge! :)
